Leesburg, VA Plastic Surgeon Discusses ASPS Mommy Makeover Statistics and Choosing the Right Practice for a Procedure
The latest study by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) reports a rise in plastic surgery among women of child-bearing age, also stating that in 2009, more than 325,000 mommy makeover procedures were performed nationally on women ages 20 to 39. Mommy makeovers are comprehensive procedures targeted for women seeking to enhance their post-baby body. The procedures typically combine breast augmentation and/or breast lift, tummy tuck, and liposuction. Dr. Behzad Parva, a plastic surgeon in Leesburg, VA, discusses the increase in procedures associated with mommy makeovers and the implications this growth may have on patients seeking plastic surgery.
Plastic Surgeon Behzad Parva, MD says he has seen an increase at his practice in the number of women seeking plastic surgery in Leesburg, VA, particularly among those who are of child-bearing age. According to a recent survey by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), over 325,000 mommy makeover procedures were performed nationally on women ages 20 to 39. The ASPS statistics also show that if cost were not an issue, 62% of moms say they would consider a mommy makeover.
Dr. Parva says the mommy makeover procedures have become increasingly popular as media focus continues to idealize attractive mothers through television shows such as The Swan and The Real Housewives. However, he also adds that despite attention from these shows, most of his post-baby patients simply want to restore their bodies to the way they were before having children. Dr. Parva says he has seen evidence of this popularity as mommy makeover procedures have increased dramatically at his practice in the past few years. “As I meet with moms from all walks of life, a common theme I hear is their desire to reverse the physical changes that resulted from pregnancy. Active, energetic moms want to restore body balance and reclaim their youthful appearance so it is a true reflection of how they feel inside.”
Over the past decade, procedures associated with mommy makeovers have experienced dramatic leaps in popularity, according to the ASPS study. Tummy tucks have increased by 85% since 2000, breast lifts by 70%, and breast augmentation by 39%. In particular, Dr. Parva says breast augmentation in Leesburg has seen significant growth since 2009 and is now the most popular procedure at his office. For post-partum women, re-establishing breast volume through implants can provide a significant boost in self-confidence when a mom is left with a reduced volume in the breast after pregnancy and nursing.
Because of the rise in the number of procedures performed and the overall demand for plastic surgery, Dr. Parva says the risk of “fad” plastic surgery and inexperienced plastic surgeons also increases. He suggests researching extensively to find the best options for a personalized and successful treatment.
For patients considering a mommy makeover, Dr. Parva says he recommends patients consult with a surgeon who is board certified in plastic surgery in order to ensure they have the proper experience and qualifications. He also says that being specific about post-baby body goals can help patients choose the appropriate procedures that will offer them lasting and quality results. “Confirm that the plastic surgeon is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and that he or she performs breast and body rejuvenation procedures often, with consistent, good results. A relationship should also be established that gives the patient peace and confidence in the quality and personalized care they will receive from the plastic surgeon and the entire staff.”
