When Should I Consider a Mommy Makeover?
A Mommy Makeover can be an excellent surgical solution for many women desiring to restore their pre-pregnancy figure after having one or multiple children. Aesthetic concerns that patients most frequently seek to address with this combination treatment include stretched skin in the abdomen, loose abdominal musculature, sagging and/or lost volume in the breasts, localized pockets of fat, and stretch marks throughout the midsection. Depending on each individual’s specific needs and cosmetic goals, a Mommy Makeover generally consists of two or more of the following procedures:
- Breast Augmentation
- Mastopexy
- Tummy Tuck
- Liposuction
For women interested in a Mommy Makeover, there are a number of factors that should be taken into consideration to help ensure that optimal short- and long-term results are achieved. One such factor is the timing of the procedure. Our Virginia plastic surgeon—Dr. Behzad Parva—typically recommends that prospective patients who have recently had children wait a minimum of one month following the cessation of breastfeeding to schedule their Mommy Makeover. Doing so should provide enough time for the breasts to settle, enabling the most appropriate treatment plan to be formulated. In the event a patient wants to have more kids in the future, Dr. Parva advises waiting until they are no longer planning to grow their family, as the probable side effects of a subsequent pregnancy may negatively affect the outcome of a previous Mommy Makeover.
As with most other cosmetic procedures, an additional factor to consider when scheduling a Mommy Makeover is the necessary period of downtime and recovery. In the majority of cases, patients will need to rest for approximately seven to ten days before they are well enough to return to work and/or resume normal daily routines. Furthermore, any heavy lifting and/or strenuous activity will need to be avoided for at least six weeks to help diminish the risk of post-surgical complications. Whenever possible, Dr. Parva usually suggests that patients arrange for a friend or loved one to assist with childcare and other household responsibilities in the days immediately following surgery.
While the information above can serve as a general guideline for when to schedule a Mommy Makeover, the ideal timing will ultimately be unique to each patient. If you are interested in this comprehensive treatment option, we encourage you to schedule a consultation with Dr. Parva to find out if a Mommy Makeover would be the best option for you at this time.
