How Do I Know If I Have Gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia is characterized by an enlargement of breast tissue in boys and men. Though gynecomastia typically affects males at the onset of puberty, the condition can develop at any age. In some cases, gynecomastia that coincides with puberty will resolve on its own. However, in many instances, an excess of breast tissue and fat accumulation in the chest persists in spite of diet and exercise efforts.
The exact cause of gynecomastia is not always known, but factors that can contribute to an enlargement of male breast tissue include hormonal changes, genetics, reactions to certain medications, alcohol consumption, or the use of tobacco, marijuana, and/or steroids. Some common symptoms of gynecomastia include:
- Overdeveloped breasts
- Disproportionately sized breasts
- Excessive glandular tissue
- Accumulated skin and fat in the chest
- Swelling or protrusion of the nipples
- Breast tenderness
